FAQs
What is Chinese medicine?
Chinese medicine is a full system of healthcare with a rich clinical history. It is suited to treat both acute and chronic issues. This medicine is based on a very different theoretical understanding than Western medicine, using the patterns of natural systems to understand human physiology. These patterns repeat themselves at a macro and micro level. Using diagnostic skills, we can determine what patterns are presenting in our patients, then provide treatments that guide their bodies back to physiological function.
How many treatments will I need for ______?
The path to health looks different for every patient. Not only does each person have a different health complaint, but they also a very unique health history. In most cases, acute illness will resolve more quickly than chronic illness. Adding herbal medicine to acupuncture appointments also may increase the speed of recovery. I use 6 visits as a baseline treatment plan. From here we can measure how your body is responding and if more treatment will be needed. While a session of acupuncture can have immediate pain reducing and relaxing effects, you should not expect your health concern to be resolved in one treatment.
Does acupuncture hurt?
No! At least not in the way you might be thinking. Acupuncture needles are incredibly thin, the width of a few human hairs. We use pre-sterilized, single-use, stainless steel needles. Sometimes patients will feel sensations around the needles, such as heaviness, warmth or coolness, or even tingling. We often look for these sensations to know that we have needled the correct location and are getting a response from the body.
How should I expect to feel after my appointment?
Patients often feel very relaxed after treatment. If possible, it’s ideal to take it easy after your appointment, especially if you’re new to acupuncture.
If we do a lot of needling for an orthopedic complaint, you may feel sore the next day — like you “had a good workout.” Needling in this way stimulates the muscles to contract and relax, and helps tense muscles to return to a resting state.
Do I need to wear special clothes for my appointment?
Wear clothes that you feel comfortable in. Ideally, pants can be pushed up above the knee and shirts rolled up to the elbows, but if we need to access a specific area, we have plenty of sheets and towels for draping to keep you covered and comfortable.
If you have any specific braces, orthotics, or compression wear, please bring that as well!
